Stonewall Jackson "Stoney" Van Hook, Jr. was born February 14, 1919at Whitehaven, Shelby County, TN. He is of North Carolinian ancestry. Hisgrandfather, John Henry Van Hook (10/2/1818--2/16/1868), the son of IsaacVan Hook, was born in Franklin County, NC.
John Henry Van Hook married (1844) Sarah Bledsoe (1/15/1825KY--7/9/1890) who was a niece of Daniel Boone (the daughter of DanielBoone's sister, Nancy). John Henry Van Hook emigrated from North Carolinacirca 1840 with the intention of going to TX, but stopped in ShelbyCounty, TN and settled on a 320-acre farm near Memphis. He erected a homeon the farm, and he and Sarah reared their family there.
Stonewall Jackson Van Hook, Sr., the eighth of the eleven childrenof John Henry and Sarah, was born at the old homeplace May 11, 1862, anddied in the same house sixty-three years later, November 6, 1925.Stonewall, Sr. married (9/23/1916) Abbie Beard (1878-1966) who was anative of Arkansas. She was the daughter of Arthur Hopkins Beard(1843-1928) who was a captain under General Nathan Bedford Forrest.Captain Beard received a bullet wound in the bloody Battle of Shilohwhich shattered the bones in his right wrist and arm. A battlefieldoperation was performed by a doctor and a black equipped with a butcherknife, a meat saw, and with only whiskey to deaden the pain. The arm wasamputated below the elbow.
Stonewall, Sr. and Abbie were the parents of two children: LouiseVan Hook who married Archie Thomas Weaver, and Stonewall Jackson "Stoney"Van Hook, Jr.
Stonewall "Stoney" Jr. was born in the old ancestral home nearWhitehaven, Shelby County. The operation of the huge family plantationrequired much manpower and boy-power. He was an avid sportsman--fishing,hunting, etc. and a member of football, basketball and track teams. Hemade the All-West TN team as an end at Whitehaven High School. He alsoplayed football at Memphis State U. where he received his pre-med degree.Dr. S. J. Van Hook, Jr. received his Doctor of Medicine degree at theUniversity of TN at Memphis on 27 September 1943. He served hisinternship at the General Hospital in Knoxville.
Dr. Van Hook served in the US Naval Reserve Medical Corps from 11April 1945 until 22 December 1946. He took a post-graduate course inAnesthesiology and Obstetrics at UT Memphis in 1946.
Dr. Van Hook opened his first private practice in Oliver Springs, TNon February 4, 1947. At first he leased an office, then he built ahome-office combination on the corner of Roane and Pine Streets in 1948.The Van Hooks later moved to larger quarters. The practice grew rapidly,and he was for many years the only doctor with an office in OliverSprings. Additionally, he served as Physician for the Brushy MountainState Penitentiary at Petros from 1948 to 1959, and much of the medicalwork for the Oliver Springs Coal Company at Windrock.
While serving his internship at the General Hospital in Knoxville,Dr. Van Hook met Gladys Scarbrough who was in Nurses Training at the samehospital. They were married March 1, 1947, and made their home in OliverSprings. Mrs. Van Hook was very active in civic, political and churchactivities. Their children are:
Stonewall Jackson "Stoney" Van Hook III who married Betty Baker ofClinton.
Joseph Henry "Joey" Van Hook who married Teresa Owens. Joe is apracticing attorney with an office in Oliver Springs.
